Creative teams are being asked to produce more than ever.
More formats. More sizes. More versions. More platforms. More campaigns.
But the teams producing that work aren't growing at the same pace.
Today, the average campaign brief generates 16 creative files. In 2022, it generated just 10.
That growing gap between the amount of creative brands need and the people available to produce it is what we call the Creative Burden.
And for the first time, we've measured it.
Introducing The Creative Burden Index 2026
The inaugural Creative Burden Index draws on more than 700,000 creative files produced through the Cape.io platform between September 2022 and August 2026 to understand how the demands placed on creative teams have changed.
The picture is striking.
Campaigns grew 44% over the period. But the number of creative files inside those campaigns grew 121%.
In other words, creative production is expanding far faster than campaign volume.
And while teams are under pressure to keep up, marketing headcount has been growing at just 2.5–5.5% a year.
The result is a widening production gap.
So what's driving the burden?
Part of the answer is the way advertising platforms have evolved.
As platforms increasingly automate placement and delivery decisions, advertisers need to supply creative for more possible combinations of placements, formats and environments.
More automation on the media side can therefore mean more creative demand on the production side.
The result is a creative landscape where producing one campaign increasingly means producing many more versions of the same idea.
And the trend isn't slowing down.
What happens next?
If creative output continues to grow at its recent rate, the volume of work required by the end of the decade could look very different from today.
That raises a bigger question for marketing teams:
Can creative production scale at the same rate as media demand without simply scaling headcount with it?
The Creative Burden Index 2026 explores what the data tells us — where the burden came from, where it's heading, what it could cost, and how brands are already using automation to close the gap.
